The treasury of a people’s memory is found in their songs. If we want to teach First Agers to play with God, to play in God’s Garden, to “wake up” and go out in mission into the world for service in the “playing field of life,” then we must teach them the songs of our faith, along with their narratives and metaphors. These are the songs that make the lips quiver and the spine shiver and turn acts of faith into acts of art.

The sound command of narrative identity awakens us to the pleasures of God and the joy that issues from living in God’s pleasure. For Martin Luther, wine and song were of the same piece of cloth as learning and piety. “Waking up” and getting started on the road to discovery, listening and learning to recognize God’s voice—this is the stuff of the First Age. The more stories and songs we teach First Agers, the surer and stronger they will hear God’s voice over the din of the world: “Shabbat Shalom.”
